Aside from being a leading French sculptor of his time, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux was also a prolific portrait painter. The present work has recently been identified as a portrait of Monsieur Imbert, a clerk to Carpeaux’s lawyer, to whom the painting is dedicated as a souvenir of his friendship with the artist.
