Surgery on Afghan Boy

Surgery on Afghan Boy Acrylic on canvas 30 x 30 in. 2007-09

Lt.(N) Tim Lund (surgical nurse), Dr. Brian Dubois (surgeon), Aziz and Maj. Brian Church (anaesthetist).

On my first day at Role 3, I was invited to witness the surgery of four-year-old Aziz, an Afghan boy caught in crossfire. Through an interpreter, his father agreed to allow me to watch the procedure. Having initially suffered gunshot wounds to his back, Aziz had returned for further surgery due to liver complications.
